Since I blogged "Anomic Suicides?"Thursday, January 8, 2009,Someone at Alternet wrote an article along similar lines and now I see another great piece as well from the Christian Science Monitor on the spate of murders the US has been experiencing.
I have been skeptical of some copycat effect meme theories surrounding shootings,but patterns aside,there does seem to an uptick in shootings. People's psychological wellbeing is under tremendous stress to say the least,and those prone to crack apear to be doing so.
This rampage at the nursing home in Carthage,N.C. is troubling all around. The first thing,aside from the horror,that popped into my mind,was how demonstrably weaker the targets were than the assailant. Made me think of how the rightwing Unitarian Church shooter may have targeted the meek perceiving they are too weak to put up a fight. Is this domestic violence thinking at play?
